It’s one and done for Sam Hornish, Jr.’s stint in the No. 9 for Richard Petty Motorsports. Yesterday at Phoenix International Raceway, Richard Petty confirmed Hornish would not return to RPM for 2016.
There’s been no indication of who will fill the seat, but the front runner for the car is rumored to be David Ragan, whose year started filling in for Kyle Busch, before finishing the season racing the No. 55 for Michael Waltrip Racing.
Ragan had previously raced for a Ford Team during his time at Roush Fenway Racing until sponsorship fell through. Sponsorship is definitely still a major factor for the No. 9 for 2016 and beyond.
Other possibilities include Chris Buescher, Bubba Wallace or Regan Smith, all of whom are seeking a Cup ride. Buescher is currently leading the points in the Xfinity series going into their last race of the season. Wallace and Buescher both are current Ford drivers. Smith has said he’s not returning to Xfinity Series’ JR Motorsports in 2016, and has multiple times expressed interest in returning back to the Cup series after he was relieved of his Front Row Motorsports ride when Kurt Busch became available.
No word on where, if anywhere Hornish will race next year.
