Just under a week ago, the NASCAR world got a great announcement in that No. 55 Michael Waltrip Racing driver Brian Vickers would only miss the first two races of the 2015 season. Speculation has been flying as to who would fill in for the Daytona 500 and the following week’s race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
The restrictor plate race to start the 2015 season was a forgone conclusion. Co-owner of MWR, Michael Waltrip who still tries to race the four restrictor plate races in the Cup series was the obvious choice for MWR and its No. 55 sponsors, and that announcement was made long ago.
But the second race of the season was not officially announced until this morning. MWR development driver Brett Moffitt, who ran several Cup races last year in the No. 66 MWR partnered car confirmed on Twitter that he had gotten the nod to drive the No. 55 in Atlanta.
No further word has been given on if Michael Waltrip Racing will field a car for either Waltrip or Moffitt in races further into the season, but MWR wants to at some point get back to a three-car operation after losing the No. 56 after 2013.
Brian Vickers has been medically cleared to race in the third Sprint Cup race in 2015 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
